Meet Nancy on World Earth Day

By Nancy Kennils, Sustainability Manager, 亚博体育官网 - 22 April 2025

Meet Nancy, our newly appointed Sustainability Manager, on what is World Earth Day (22 April)...

Hi there! My name is Nancy Kennils and I was recently appointed as 亚博体育官网鈥檚 Sustainability Manager.

In my role I am actively involved in The Sustainability Group, driving sustainability across all areas of our business from teaching and research to innovation and our campus operations. I will be coordinating our annual sustainability report, our league table entries, alongside developing our policies and practices within Estates. I am enthusiastic about leading environmentally impactful practices and am delighted to join a team who are passionate about making a positive difference in our society and the wider world.

My background is quite varied as I鈥檝e been very fortunate to have a career that spans not only industries but also continents. I have come to learn how fabulous but also fragile our world is and how even small changes can have incredible impacts around the globe. Having previously worked in countries across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, I have seen first-hand the impacts of integrating sustainable practices into culture.

Prior to 亚博体育官网, I worked for the Department for Work and Pensions, coaching people to return to work. This experience was eye-opening and emphasised how having a moral purpose with action positively impacts your personal wellbeing.

Similarly, one of the most satisfying parts of my role is doing something I really care about.

As 亚博体育官网鈥檚 Sustainability Manager, I lead a team that strives to improve active travel options to campus reducing our commuter emissions, develop biodiversity across the 亚博体育官网 estate ensuring we act responsibly in the maintenance and development our future, and improve energy use and efficiency across our estate. We also support and encourage all our departments in aligning their behaviours and actions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Learning about and promoting 亚博体育官网鈥檚 ongoing efforts to reduce our negative environmental impacts and contribute to a fair and equal society has been really exciting. Projects such as the restoration of Waterside Farm not only cement our commitment to improving biodiversity but also provide an asset in forming partnerships and research opportunities across the University.

I am incredibly keen to get to know and work with more of the 亚博体育官网 community to drive environmental momentum.

If you would like to learn about sustainability at 亚博体育官网, volunteer at Waterside Farm or talk about how we can support each other to drive positive change and inspire those around us, please get in touch with me at n.kennils@rgu.ac.uk.
